Tune the music

So, I am going to preface this with the fact that I am not the least bit musically inclined, at all. Can’t sing, play an instrument, make a beat, you name it. However, I very much appreciate the art of music that other people or groups make. I do emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. However, what I can do is feel the emotions in the music. It may be the melody, the words, or both that resonate in my soul. Am I alone in this? I have songs and playlists that can solicit a feeling or mood in an instant which his super helpful when trying to reset. Even if it was not intentional, have you ever been in a store and a song randomly turns on and you immediately felt something? Ta-da, this is part of what I am talking about. Don’t lie, you can’t tell me that you have not randomly heard “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey or the drumming part of “In the air tonight” by Phil Collins and wanted to bust into a jam session!

As I am typing this, I have all of the songs that were downloaded on my phone on shuffle. I am intentional with the music that I download because not only do I have to pay for each song, but there is only so much storage on my phone as well. Since the songs are on shuffle, I am reminded of the effects through the different genres.

I have music ranging from Christian to rock, country to rap, 80’s to current, and even a random song or two or three that mix a few of the genres. There is a feeling of nostalgia but also comfort because that’s what it does for me.

What attracts you to one song rather than another? Sometimes you can answer this question easily, others not always right away, and others that you are just left with the feeling that it moves not knowing why. Time after time when I have slowed down any pay attention to a song in its entirety, every word, phrase, melody, beat, a light bulb moment often occurs of why that particular song resonates more than others. Sometimes it’s a theme going on in my life, words that I needed to be reminded of, a fun beat that I needed to get me going. For example, I have been experiencing an exceptional appreciation for sunrises and I recently noticed that a few songs that have been particularly resonating reference sunrises. There was even another time where the song was prophetic in a way that is a whole other entry that will come down the line. There has not been one time that I did not discover why that song resonated with me and then that’s when it became worthy to be added to the theme track of my life. Like how they do in the movies, there is usually a theme track that reflects the movie, my downloaded music are the songs that have been added to “Gina’s theme track”.

If there was a group of songs put together to be your theme track, what are some of the songs that would be included? What would be the first song?
